Sterile Processing Technician

Job Responsibilities:

The Sterile Processing Tech is responsible for the processing and distribution of instruments and medical equipment used in patient care areas. Independently responsible for the day-to-day workflow and provides work direction to Central Sterile Processing (CSP) staff members, ensuring compliance with Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards. Facilitates timely completion of the surgery schedule by ensuring the proper supply of instrumentation and equipment for each surgical procedure. Serves as a liaison to all operating room staff. Responsible for maintaining quality assurance logs and documentation for all sterilization equipment and processes. Must be able to work in all areas of the department i.e., decontamination, prep and pack, sterilization and sterile holding.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS         

  • Documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process
  • Documents and verifies washer/disinfector and ultrasonic check tests to determine the efficacy of the automated washer/disinfector and ultrasonic
  • Identifies and uses appropriate methods to sort, disassemble, decontamination, rinse, and disinfect instruments and equipment. Maintains safety standards
  • Inspects, wraps, containerize and/or peel package and label instruments
  • Selects appropriate sterilization methods. Knows and follows correct principles of sterilization
  • Properly handles and stores sterile and or non-sterile supplies, equipment, and instruments
  • Accesses surgery schedule. Retrieves, disburses medical and surgical supplies and equipment to operating room in a quality/timely manner
  • Knows, uses, maintains, and operates the equipment specific to SPD, i.e. steam, washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, and endoscopic machines
  • Knows and uses the process involved in stocking, rotating and delivery of supplies. Communicates supplies issues in a timely manner
  • Maintains a clean orderly work area. Completes assigned housekeeping duties
  • Serves as a resource within the organization on all SPD functions. Helps train new employees. Provides education and training within the organization
  • Assesses competency of trained personnel upon hire and annually
  • Responsible to maintain a safe and clean work environment, including unit based specific safety and infection control requirements

Job Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience in Hospital/Ambulatory Surgery Sterile Processing Department (SPD), Central Supply Room (CSR)
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Certified Surgical Technologist preferred
  • Certified Central Service Technician (CCST), Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Operating Room Technician (CORT) from IAHCSMM, CBSPD or AST required or to be obtained within 2 years of hire

Other Job Information (if applicable):
40 hours a week. Department hours are Monday through Friday 6:30am to 4:30pm. No nights, weekends, or call.
