Lab Assistant

Location:Foden Rd
Schedule:Full Time 32-40 hrs/wk

Job Responsibilities:
  • Understands all specimen requirements and can perform phlebotomy for both adult patients and pediatric patients
  • Understands Orchard LIS system and eCW to accession and process all Lab samples, including outside orders
  • Know and instruct patients on proper procedure for urine collection
  • Know what Vacutainer tubes to draw for which tests and insure that all specimens are labeled properly
  • Transfer orders from EMR to LIS and enter appropriate information
  • Check send-out log to be sure all reports have been received, call performing lab if copies of report not checked off
  • Make sure that all supply levels are maintained
  • Perform other clinical or administrative office tasks as necessary
  • Prepare samples for transport and know all specimen processing procedures
  • Keep work area clean, stocked and organized
  • Perform other clinical or administrative office tasks if not drawing patients (if applicable to site)
  • Understands and can perform all POCT Tests, including Quick Strep, Urine HcG, Urine Dip, Quick Flu and Occult Blood
    • Perform and document QC when necessary
  • Know and abide by personnel policies and procedures
  • Maintain excellent customer service with patients, staff, and physicians
  • Follow all OSHA and CLIA regulations as applied to InterMed
  • If applicable, assists the tech in the following areas:
    • Understands and can plant all in-house cultures, including urine cultures, strep cultures (throat and vaginal)
    • Build and check Micro work lists for Urine Cultures, Strep Cultures, and Vaginal Cultures
    • Package Biohazardous Waste on Wednesday toprepare for weekly pick up on Thursday
  • Disassemble and clean Clinitek Urine Analyzer daily
  • Order processing supplies as needed from various vendors and companies
  • Perform OSHA Housekeeping Tasks and document on OSHA Log:
  1. Disinfect counters with 10% bleach daily
  2. Disinfect phlebotomy chairs/area with 10% bleach daily
  3. Check Urgent Care for Samples daily
  4. Empty Confidential Trash daily
  5. Clean Centrifuge weekly
  6. Disinfect large waste buckets weekly
  7. Change sharps containers as needed

Job Qualifications:
  • Skilled and experienced phlebotomist with at least 1 years’ experience in phlebotomy with all types of patients and processing
  • Excellent professional judgment, phone skills and decision making ability
  • Must be able to implement universal precautions at all times
  • Ability to calm anxious patients
  • Teamwork and Cooperation
  • Concern for Order, Quality and Accuracy
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and plan work independently
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

40 hours a week. Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm.
