Clinical Coding Educator

Schedule:Full Time 32-40 hrs/wk

Job Responsibilities:

The Clinical Coding Educator will be an educational resource to providers and clinical staff using clinical experience, judgement and billing/coding expertise to develop and deliver meaningful and effective coding-related training.


  • Develop ongoing and ad-hoc educational coding-related curriculum/materials for new and established providers and clinical staff
  • Conduct periodic meetings with providers to include:
  • Collaborate with physician leadership on new initiatives
  • Monitor CMS and other payer updates as they pertain to coding and billing rules and regulations
  • Work alongside other departments to implement effective templates and workflows for providers and clinical staff
  • Work closely with EMR Administrator and Clinical Trainers on coding-related system updates and workflow, and develop training materials
  • Work as liaison to our Clinical Risk Coding department to find efficiencies and provide cross-training and cross-coverage opportunities. 
  • Make clinical judgement based on previous clinical experience when necessary to improve clinical coding competencies according to published guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Identify systematic barriers utilizing critical thinking skills to identify improvement opportunities and communicate them in a clear & concise manner to help gain efficiency
  • Serves as a subject matter expert

Job Qualifications:
  • Active, unencumbered Maine RN license and CPC certification required
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Business or Healthcare degree preferred
  • Certified Risk Coder (CRC) or Certified Officer of Compliance (COC) preferred
  • Must have working knowledge of the revenue cycle
  • Must have working knowledge of billing, coding, insurance practices, and the ‘language’ associated with each
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and must be able to communicate effectively to all levels of the organization
  • At least four years clinical experience required
  • At least four years of revenue cycle experience required

This is a full time position, Monday through Friday 8:00 - 5:00.
